Abstract

We review some of the key features of hands-on astronomy as applied in secondary and college classrooms. This field has experienced rapid growth, diversification, and numerous successes. We attempt to identify common features of successful programs, review hands-on activities in a few specific programs, identify obstacles to success, and finally as an example, review recent successes of the Hands-On Universe astronomical exploration program.
