Abstract

Advances in engineering and computer technology make it possible to create fully robotic (i.e. autonomous) telescopes. Here we describe a project that is building several such telescopes. These telescopes will allow astronomers to explore the dynamic nature of the universe in a way that has never been possible before, by studying changes in astronomical objects, both predictable and unexpected, on timescales from minutes to years. The same technology is also being used to support education by enabling school children to carry out their own observations on professional telescopes.
