Abstract

It has been of great concern for Turkish astronomers that the teaching of astronomy, which is a part of the physics course in secondary schools, is not very effective, mainly because a majority of the physics teachers have had no fo1mal education in astronomy. TUBITAK National Observatory (TUG) proposed to the Ministry of Education in 2005 that a national meeting for physics and astronomy teachers be held during the opportune time of the total solar eclipse of March 29, 2006 with the subject matter "teaching of astronomy and using astronomy to teach physics. The meeting, with participants from all over Turkey, was very successful. The speakers included astronomers and physicists from Turkish universities, educators from the Ministry, and three educators from abroad. The minutes of the meeting have been submitted to the Ministry of Education. The details and their relevance to the 2003 !AU Resolution and the role TUG has undertaken are presented below.
