An Exercise for Introductory Astronomy or Earth-Science Classes on Understanding the Phase Changes of Venus
Abstract
An exercise to help students understand the mechanism underlying planetary and satellite phases was developed. The exercise is a relatively simple paper-and-pencil exercise that can be completed in an hour or two. It leads students through a series of steps that brings home the significance of Galileo's discovery of the phases of Venus.
