Abstract
Astronomical science and education in Austria is concentrated at the university level. There are three universities offering courses in astronomy - Vienna and Graz in the east of Austria and Innsbruck in the west. There exist no dedicated research institutes (like e.g. the Max-Planck-Institutes in Germany). At the high school level, there are some basic lectures on e.g. the solar system, embedded into physics courses. Education of the public is carried out, at a modest level, by amateur organizations. However this is valid mainly for the east of Austria. In Vienna, there is also a public observatory owned by the town (Urania). In Tyrol, to which I will concentrate this summary, there is a small "Planetarium" in Kufstein (about 70 km east of Innsbruck). The institute of astronomy at the University of Innsbruck, with its 5.5 scientific positions, does the main work in science, education and information for the public community.
