The health of astronomy depends crucially on education in astronomy for two reasons: the education of astronomers helps to determine their competence and their attitudes, and the education of non-astronomers eventually influences the climate (financial and otherwise) in which astronomers operate. This paper touches briefly on several aspects of education in astronomy, but concentrates on the following purposes: ( i) to review the education programmes of some astronomical societies (the IAU, RAS, AAS, ASP, RASC, etc.); (ii) to indicate which material from these programmes is useful and available to Canadian astronomers and (iii) to suggest some worthwhile new projects which might be carried out by Canadian astronomers.
