Abstract
On the evening of November 28, North Americans will be treated to a total lunar eclipse as the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. For most viewers, the upcoming celestial event will simply be something interesting to watch. However, our ancestors watched an eclipse with considerably stronger emotions than just interest because an eclipse disrupted nature's normal order of events. A solar eclipse turned day temporarily into night, and a lunar eclipse darkened the brightly illuminated Moon.
