This paper is based on one given at a meeting of astronomers and teachers at the 1979 General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union. It discusses the problems of teaching astronomy in the schools, both in Canada and elsewhere, and it presents some partial solutions to these problems. It then outlines the place of astronomy in the school curriculum in Canada. Education is a provincial responsibility in Canada and curriculum planning and implementation are often delegated to local school boards. Therefore the nature, quality and quantity of the astronomy taught vary considerably across the country.
